Derrida différance pdf download

Whereas Levinas sees written communication as dead and unresponsive, Derrida argues that writing can be just as valuable a space for ethical encounter. By showing, for example, that writing can assist itself, for it has time and freedom, escaping better than speech from empirical urgencies. Included in the collection is his lecture at Johns Hopkins University , which changed the course of the conference leading it to be renamed The Structuralist Controversy , and caused Derrida to receive his first major attention outside France.

Erling states that the MWP consists of three layers: the lower made of wax, the middle made of transparent paper, and the upper made of celluloid. The upper two layers are attached to the lower layer from only one side and are loose from all other sides. The writing is conducted on the celluloid with a special pen.

During the process of writing, the words appear on the celluloid and the transparent layers. Then, by lifting the upper two layers the writing is erased, making the surface clear for subsequent inscriptions. The wax is influenced and shaped by what is written; the inscription on it is invisible but permanent in the form of fissures. Instead, he suggests the concept of temporalization as being the infinitely iterative movement of the playing trace. Besides, Brafman comments on the indications of the pads left on the wax layer that, for Freud, they are invisible yet permanent, but for Derrida, they are never permanent.

In sum, the concept of difference has been employed in the field of philosophy from sev- eral perspectives without reaching a satisfying holistic conception as is the case with almost all abstract, especially philosophical, concepts.

His core focus is on the upper layers of the MWP on which the writing is endlessly iterable and erasable. It is predominantly about the prior process of play of differences in the realm of the creation of the possibility of meaning.

This play of differences leaves a trace through the iterable movement between the presence any presence: a word, a thing…or any pole of a binary and its absence. This presence is not merely identified by its opposite, but also through other points in the plane of meaning; i. The relationship between the presence this term is given to any point to be deconstructed , its opposite absence , and its past and future within the spatial context is continuously ambivalent and changing. To trace the possibility of meaning is to capture this relation before it changes and opens the possibility for another set of meanings See Figure 1.

I argue that the iterative ambivalent movement leaves a trace. The trace disappears for another to replace it. However, the trace leaves a mark. As the movement continues, the production of traces and their marks continues as Freud explains through his MWP analogy.

The marks accumulate and make a particular invisible shape. This shape indicates some specific identification. From the trace of all the others to the trace of all the others2. From that which passed to the future that will be now in each present there. In the learning of the languages, transmitters and vehicles of transmission play, all the transmitters give some thing of their language, the language of each individual being organized in a sort of mosaic, to which contributed different and various transmitters.

Individual and collective traces inscribe themselves in words that displace themselves and cross, constituting sheaves, in which experiences, feelings, informations and knowings are inscribed, interceptions of words, nodes that name the deviation, the criticism and the contestation…, the cosmo-logo-echoes…, traces that displace themselves silently, making meaning and differing differences, traces that structure themselves in network, webs, lines that cross themselves making nodes: they are the entities, they are the memories, they are the singularities, or all, whatever we may think.

Networks that can expand themselves in unlimited way, integrating new nodes, all those that can share, in the network, the respective codes of communication: the codes of existence, the codes of life. A same gene displaces itself as trace, as trail, as memory, but that memory is opening, is possibility, is relation to others, inscribes itself in the others, but removing itself, erasing itself as heteronomy. In the others it is nothing. But that nothing is, still, the possibility of the others there, in the existence, in the life.

The genetic trace, by displacing itself, drags with itself what passed, what passed becomes future, in the present of each one there. What passed is nothing in the present of each one, however, the entities present there would not be, without the others that passed there.

The memories never repeat themselves.
